On February 15, 2019, President Donald Trump declared a national emergency in order to allocate separate funds to build a wall on our Southern border. This announcement was met with fierce criticism from both sides, with many suggesting that the President is setting a dangerous precedent by declaring a national emergency.
Something that struck me in this row between the President and lawmakers over border security was the comments from many Democrats, most notably House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senator Chuck Schumer. These politicians frequently state that the President has "manufactured" the crisis on the border. Comments like these can be found in the Democratic rebuttal to the President's Prime Time Address to the Nation.
I think that the argument that the Democrats have chosen to stick with is rather abysmal because it proves that their ideas surrounding the immigration debate are still inchoate. Here, I am giving them the benefit of the doubt that they actually believe there is no crisis on the border because it seems that they will decry anything the President does in light of the upcoming election. I encourage actual debate about the effects of illegal immigration on our nation, the ways to secure our border, and even the entire philosophy around having borders in the first place. Yet the Democratic argument is so weak.
I actually wrote a blog on December 4, 2018, that was titled "Crisis on the Border." When I wrote this, there was a migrant caravan that arrived at the border. These migrants, many of whom were seeking asylum, rushed our border. Not only did this represent an attack on our nation's sovereignty, but it also put both migrants and border patrol agents in danger.
